Rufous Hummingbird -- Male (Selasphorous rufus); Santa Fe National Forest, NM, Thompson Ridge [Lou Feltz]

            This photo was taken in early morning with a high thin overcast... a lighting condition that I prefer over the usually bright direct NM sunlight. It allows more feathering detail to be captured (usually at the expense of less iridescence). This guy has already assumed guard duty... monitoring the nectar feeders below for other male intrusions! We get these beauties only during the fall migration pass-throughs.
