LA ROSA CENTIFOLIA

Grandi fiori rosa e profumatissimi incorniciati da un denso muschio scuro. Fioritura primaverile. Fecero un grande scalpore al loro apparire, soprattutto in Inghilterra, dove vennero introdotte dal continente. Comparvero in tutti i giardini, particolarmente in epoca vittoriana ed è per questo motivo che oggi, tra le rose antiche, le Muscose rappresentano proprio il particolare stile e gusto ottocentesco.

Le Centifolia si dice che siano originarie di Provenza e sono anche conosciute con questo nome. Non furono introdotte che a partire dal 1650 ca. ed erano ibridi di diverse specie. Si presume che siano state introdotte in Europa dall'Asia Minore, per opera di mercanti olandesi. Nelle prime notizie sulle Centifolia si fa confusione con la Rosa damascena ed è interessante notare che la Rosa centifolia, menzionata da Linneo, era in realtà la Rosa damascena bifera. Erano coltivate per il loro delizioso profumo e la bellezza dei loro fiori fu spesso ritratta dai pittori olandesi e fiamminghi.
"Soltanto se ben coltivate, le varietà di Rosa centifolia - dice il grande esperto Graham Stuart Thomas - possono dirsi buone piante da giardino. Il più delle volte i loro rami spinosi sono tutt'altro che eleganti, ma quando appaiono i loro incantevoli fiori doppi, gli perdoniamo ogni difetto".
