I saw Jah playing the drum and singing some Bob Marley classics and he was well into the grove, occasionally swinging his dreadlocks around. I was chomping on my lunch at the time but decided that I would approach him for a portrait if he was still there when I finished my food.

I told him that he looked like the kind of guy that would love to have a great portrait of himself and he was all over getting a shot down, although he did seem a little unease in front of the camera. I struggled to get him to open up to the lens without leaning back for the portrait shots so I decided to have a little fun. If you know me at all you know that I love the work of Frank Doorhof, a fashion and portrait photographer from The Netherlands, and I remembered watching one of his model demo shoots online with the hair swinging around and decided that this would be my very first ever attempt.

Jah, who showed me his form for appearing on 'The Voice' was again, a little nervous of the lens at first, but I soon started channelling Frank Doorhof by telling him that each shot was great or awesome and, after each shot, saying 'okay, just one more', 'okay, this is the last one' and so on. It worked!

Captured using only natural light and processed only in Lightroom, I am so pleased that I nailed this shot. Sadly the email address that Jah gave to me bounced so I am waiting for him to contact me from my business card so that I can send the shots to him. Enjoy!
