History of the Green Polaroid One Step Camera

In the 1970's the Polaroid Corporation was interested in finding out if the consumer might desire cameras in colors other than the traditional gray/black/silver designs most manufacturer's offered. Sample cameras of various colors were assembled and survey teams asked mall shoppers across the country to give their opinions. One of these cameras was a green Polaroid One Step.

I was a camera buyer employed by Modern Merchandise and Publishing Co. and one of my responsibilities was an annual selection of products for the millions of catalogs they mailed. Some of the firms, whose names you might recognize, Service Merchandise, Ardan's, Naum Brothers, Luria & Co., Best Products, and others distributed the catalogs in their sales areas with their printed covers.The Polaroid sales management team met with us often to insure their products were included in our catalogs.

The year after the successful introduction of the Polaroid One Step camera, we met in, in March for the introduction of new cameras that year. I had been informed that our meeting this year would be held on March 17th. That, of course, would coincide with my dedicated celebration of St. Patrick's Day. (I will note here that I am of Irish ancestry and typically take vacation for cultural activities on and around March 17th.) This came as a shock to my family and associates as we are all very involved in the celebration and my out-of-town trip was not received favorably. I did, however, make the trip.

After the presentation of new Polaroid products had been made and the Polaroid sales people had finished their negotiations the Polaroid Vice President of Merchandising asked to speak. To my surprise, and that of all my associates on the selection committee, he presented me with the only Green Polaroid One Step camera ever produced.
