Devils Kitchen in Tasman National Park (Tasmania)

            The Tasman Peninsula is well known for its rugged eastern coastline, and much of it is now the Tasman National Park. At Eaglehawk Neck are many intriguing rock formations, including the Devils Kitchen, the Tasman's Arch, the Blow Hole and the Tessellated Pavement (see other photos in this album). The first three formations are of a similar origin: all are former sea caves or tunnels. However, the Blowhole has retained much of its roof, Tasmans Arch has lost most of its roof, and the roof of the Devils Kitchen has completely fallen in. Further south are the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere, rising 300 meter (980 feet) above the Tasman Sea at Cape Pillar.

Geological processes, such as the weathering of rocks, are very slow by human reckoning. Except in sudden events such as the collapse of a roof of an cave, changes to the landscape are measured in thousands to millions of years. But changes are occurring: a boulder is dislodged, sand and stones wear down rock surfaces, and soil is washed away.
