It's really not as bad as it looks.

In fact driving the Shafer Trail is a lot of fun if you have a high clearance vehicle and take your time.  It's a one lane road, so you occasionally have to negotiate a pull over with the oncoming traffic.   But the views are fantastic.

The trail was built in 1917 by John Shafer, a local rancher who wanted to move his cattle herds from the Island in the Sky mesa to down near the Colorado River for overwintering.  In the late 1940s and 1950s the trail was improved for uranium prospecting.  Although much uranium was found in the larger area around Moab, very little was actually found within what is now the Canyonlands National Park.
