Painting by Séraphine de Senlis - a photo on Flickriver

            I was delighted to have a chance to learn of an artist who is new to me when I visited the Musee Maillol earlier on my current trip.  Séraphine Louis (Séraphine de Senlis) (1864–1942) was a French painter in the naïve style. A former sheperdess and servant in at Senlis, her work was discovered in 1912 by art collector Wilhelm Uhde. While in Senlis, Uhde saw a still-life of apples at his neighbor's house and was astonished to learn that Louis, his housecleaner, was the artist. Under Uhde's patronage, Louis came to prominence as a naïve painter of her day. (Wikepedia)

Sadly, she ended life in an asylum which she entered after her patron stopped buying her works (the article was unclear but implied a connection).  The exhibition is only on for a few more days, but I recommend it very highly - or seek her work elsewhere, it is a revelation.
