Sheneval - a photo on Flickriver

Sheneval

            Thawing out in the Strath na Sealga, this bothy catches the sun for less than two hours each day in mid-winter. It took so long for the sun to grace this spot with some warmth that we headed west along the glen towards Loch na Sealga to meet up with the sun a little sooner. After spending the morning in the cold, meeting the sun half way along to the loch was glorious; like lizards we found the nearest rock to bask on, in complete, warm, silence, as the herds of deer grazed in the glen below.

Beinn Dearg Mor and Beinn Dearg Bheag dominate the backdrop to this idyllic location. Loch na Sealga is just visible at the right of the frame. As lonely as this bothy looks, it does have a few neighbouring homesteads: across the glen, where the sun runs down to the base of Beinn Dearg Mor, sits Larachantivore, and a little upriver is Achneigie. Sitting here, looking across the expanse of the glen, I wondered if the three houses were ever all inhabited, forming a micro-community of strewn-out neighbours, hidden away from the rest of what is already a fairly remote part of Scotland.
