Europäischer Laubfrosch (Hyla arborea), subadult

            Yeah, it's a bit of a cliché, but it's a fun one, don't you think? One often sees South American tree frogs depicted in this way, so when the need for exoticism hit me, I went out for the next best thing. Hyla arborea is the only naturally occurring anuran species in Germany which behaviourally lends itself to this kind of silhouetting, taking their summer habitat on hedges and in trees. 

I recently found out that two populations exist on opposite ends of Essen city limits. Both seem to be the result of illegal release efforts by private individuals. In fact one of the two populations might even be in contact with an introduced population of the non-native Mediterranean tree frog (Hyla meridionalis) from a neighbouring city, opening up the problem of genetic introgression. 

In terms of time spent and shots taken this might have been my most effecient wildlife shooting to date, even though I only found one specimen that day. All in all I'm not completely satisfied with this shot, but can't put my finger on what irks me. Maybe less uniform lighting would have been better. Will have to retry with a flashlight at night maybe.
