Streifen-Ringelnatter ♀ (Natrix natrix cf. persa)

            Near the end of this year's reptile season here in Germany, I finally managed to get a shot of a sizeable adult female grass snake. I was a bit surprised to find though, that it had such a vibrant orange collar, as most of the juveniles around here present cream white or yellow markings, which tend to grow rather less conspicious with age. In this case though, framed by broad black margins on a stout head, they make for an impressive display. This however is not the only thing unusual about the specimen. 
It also shows two light vertical stripes running parallel along it's back. These are typically associated with animals of the subspecies N. n. persa from south-eastern Europe. At least a few of these bilineated individuals are present in the population, most likely the result of human introduction and subsequent interbreeding. (Cases of proven N. n. persa presence have been reported from Switzerland and the UK.) Furthermore the location of the find probably still falls within the eastern rim of the natural interspecies hybrid zone of N. natrix and N. helvetica. Once I even found a juvenile, that to me looked suspiciously like N. astreptophora from Iberia. Short of DNA testing though, there is no way to tell for sure what fresh hell of genetic introgression the depicted animal might have sprung from. 

What is sure, however, is that it is irresponsible to release exotic pets. Also: It's illegal.
