George Robert White Memorial in Boston Public Garden

George Robert White (1847–1922) was an American philanthropist. He was a citizen of Boston, Massachusetts for most of his life. As a boy he began working for the Weeks and Potter Drug Company. Over time White's responsibilities grew and he eventually became the president and owner of the firm. White changed the name of the corporation to that of the Potter Drug and Chemical Company. The company was best known for its antibacterial soap with the brand name Cuticura. Over the course of his life he amassed a fortune. He was active in a number of charitable organizations, and after his death in 1922 he bequeathed a sizable endowment on the City of Boston named The George Robert White Fund.

Standing at the edge of a fountain, this graceful angel or allegorical figure literally enacts the Biblical verse, “Cast thy bread upon the waters,” to honor one of Boston’s primary philanthropists. George Robert White earned a fortune in the pharmaceuticals business and made significant contributions to a variety of Boston institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts General Hospital. Upon his death, he donated over $5 million to finance “works of public beauty and utility” throughout the City of Boston.

Originally titled "The Spirit of Giving" this allegorical figure casts her bread upon the water. This was the first figure that iBoston used to raise money for charity by selling holiday greeting cards on line. George Robert White was one of Boston's leading philanthropists, having amassed a fortune in wholesale drugs. When he died in 1922, he left the city a five million dollar bequest to build clinics and fund the arts. Within this legacy was a $50,000 gift and request to build a memorial by which he might be remembered. The bronze statue's sculptor, Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) gained notoriety after executing his first large work, The Minute Man (1875) in Concord.

Near the Beacon-Arlington corner stands the beautiful angel monument and fountain honoring George Robert White, one of Boston’s greatest benefactors. When he died in 1922, his will included a charitable trust for public art, with $50,000 set aside for his own memorial. Erected in 1924, the monument is the last of the many collaborations by the sculptor Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon. Symbolizing White’s largesse are the two cornucopias that feed the cobbled granite pool and the graceful bronze angel “casting bread upon the waters.”

The Public Garden, also known as Boston Public Garden, is a large park in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston Common. It is a part of the Emerald Necklace system of parks, and is bounded by Charles Street and Boston Common to the east, Beacon Street to the north, Arlington Street and Back Bay to the west, and Boylston Street to the south. The Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America.
