La Rive Gauche (la orilla izquierda) se sitúa al sur del río Sena en París, dejando al norte la Rive Droite, por lo que París queda dividida en dos mitades más o menos similares en cuanto a extensión.
La Rive Gauche es una de las zonas más románticas de la ciudad: éste es el París de otra época, el París de los artistas, escritores y filósofos, entre ellos Pablo Picasso, Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine, Henri Matisse, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald y docenas de otros miembros de la gran comunidad artística que frecuentaba Montparnasse. Algunas de sus calles son el famoso Boulevard Saint-Germain (aquí me tomé el mejor chocolate de mi vida), Boulevard Saint-Michel (parecido al Trastévere de Roma) y la Rue de Rennes.
Más que una región geográfica, la Rive Gauche se ha convertido en sinónimo de un estilo de vida, de la moda, de la bohemia: si quieres conocer la noche parisina, esta es tu zona (doy fe...)
Una de sus zonas más conocidas y pintorescas es el Barrio Latino, llamado así porque antiguamente los estudiantes universitarios que se agolpaban en esta zona de las inmediaciones de la Universidad de París hablaban frecuentemente el latín (supongo que para contar chistes no).

The Latin Quarter is a Left Bank area in the 5th arrondissement, so named because originally Latin was widely spoken by students in the vicinity of the University of Paris.
