Chicago was once fed on the rails. Fed hogs and cattle and corn. The city’s current status as a hub for all flavors of transportation sprouted from its stockyards and railyards. Little has changed today, the city is a spider’s web of rail tracks carrying freight from all over the world. These rails are so pervasive the streets themselves have to dart around, above, below and between them. The photograph below was taken on goose island where the rails and the street coexist. Occasionally there is a freight car full of lumber parked in the middle of the street - causing you to wonder “how the hell did I drive up onto the tracks?? Should I even be here?,” not this morning though, only the rain and my lens lay on the rails.
