Stomaphis wojciechowskii, new to Britain

It's official - morphological and molecular analysis has confirmed that the aphids I've been studying for the last four months are indeed Stomaphis wojciechowskii, the pale giant oak aphid, a species never previously recorded in Britain.

The morphological analysis was conducted by Dr. Roger Blackman, a Research Associate within the Department of Life Sciences at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London, from clarified mounts of specimens prepared by Paul Brown, Senior Curator for Sternorrhyncha at the NHM. Roger Blackman is a world authority on aphids and author of one of the RES handbooks on aphids. Together with the late Victor Eastop, he also compiled the comprehensive database of aphids on the world's plants, which is now available online at www.aphidsonworldsplants.info/.

The molecular (COI barcode) analysis was conducted by Dr Lukasz Depa of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. It was Dr Depa who first described and named Stomaphis wojciechowskii as a new species in 2012. He also has an extensive list of publications on other species of Stomaphis.

I am also extremely grateful to Chris Evans and Sarah Tarrant at Natural England for permission to study and collect specimens of the aphids from Monks Wood NNR, where this image was taken.
