Santa María de Castelló d'Empúries, Empordà Cathedral or Cathedral of Castelló d'Empúries is a Gothic church located in the Puig Salner district of the old town of Castelló d'Empúries (Alt Empordà). It was built on the primitive Romanesque church, of which there are some vestiges, such as the first floors of the bell tower or the great baptismal font. It is a clear exponent of Catalan Gothic architecture, being evident in some of its elements more characteristics: the return of warhead, the large pillars, the heavy buttresses on the outside or the large windows with stained glass windows. It is a work declared a cultural asset of national interest.
The church of Santa María is one of the prototypes of a living room church or unitary compartmentalized space, typical of Catalan Gothic, a modality introduced by the Cistercian monks. The living room floor has a rectangular layout of the church structure with the side chapels framed between the buttresses, crowned by gargoyles of drainage, which support the side walls. In the head and in the first two screens, with the lower side naves, the buttresses are completed by flying buttresses.
Each of the three naves of the plant is formed by nine turns of warhead supported by pillars, with the elements of this construction: the arcs formeros and the four nerves that converge in a key. The main altar is a now (consecrated stone) more than three meters long, supported by five columns, and what services to celebrate the mass. It had been inside the presbytery, on the other side of the iron gate, but in 1973 it was moved to its current location, closer to the faithful. Note the large side chapels of the Purísima Sangre and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, added in the eighteenth century, which give the appearance of a false transept.
The main façade has a large stone portal from the 15th century, attributed to the master builder Antoni Antigó, and it is divided into three spaces: two bell towers and a central gable. This central capcer has the cover, framed between two pinnacles. It emphasizes its beauty formed by six archivolts that delimit the tympanum and the fronton. The adoration of the Magi is represented in the tympanum. The six archivolts are topped by twelve niches that house the twelve apostles. All the sculptures are cut with great perfection and profusion of details. Under the niches, a base with blind windows rest on a bench. Above the doorway and occupying the upper part of the gable, there is a large Gothic rose window, which gives light inside the temple.
The oldest element of the complex is the bell tower, which dates perhaps from the 13th century. It has the Romanesque structure, but some decorative elements, such as the lobed arches inside the blind arches, are already Gothic. Of square plant and about twenty meters of height, the bell tower presents / displays the two lower floors without no opening and the three superiors with an opening tríforas each façade, on which there are pointed arcs blind and a border of saw. The completion of the tower is crenellated. The apparatus of the work is of ashlars, of dark gray volcanic stone.
