Escape from LC-39A

            In the foreground are the ends of the escape lines from Launch Complex 39A: seven frames each with a net. If you look closely (may need to see the original full-size image), you can see the wires connecting each terminus to the service tower (tallest one) in the background, just over half way up the tower if the lightning suppression tower isn't considered in the height. They were supposed to allow the seven Space Shuttle astronauts a way to move quickly away from the launch site in case of an emergency. Each astronaut would ride on a basket suspended from a wire that moved using gravity to this spot. Then the astronauts would enter a bunker through the two doors in the hill that could protect them if the Space Shuttle exploded with a full load of propellant. Seems like the trip from the Space Shuttle to the baskets to the bunker might take too long to be helpful.
