Les Halles (Market hall) of Dijon on a rainy day - 11 pictures

Markets and market halls have always been strategic places and centers of attraction in the heart of cities. The construction of the Halles de Dijon was begun in 1868 after several years of debate. With a total height of 13 meters, the building covers 4400m² with 4 pavilions articulated around two 'streets' cross. It houses 246 shops, 14 annexes and 728 benches. The layout of the roof is strongly inspired by that of the central markets of Paris with the same frame style used for covered streets and pavilions. Air and light penetrate through glass louvres, open work panels and skylights (elevations pierced with openings above the roofs).
