Sanctuary on a Hill: Vík í Mýrdal Church

            While reading up on this church, I was fascinated to discover that it is the literal refuge of the tiny town of Vík (Vík í Mýrdal).

The town's listed population is right around 300 people, and it sits at the base of the Katla volcano, which is overdue for an eruption. An eruption of this volcano would trigger glacial melting (a glacier is on top of the volcano) and this is likely to cause significant flash floods in the town. This church on the hill is supposed to be one of the only buildings that would safely be out of harm's way of such flash floods.

This concludes my themed week looking at some of the interesting Icelandic churches we encountered in our journeys. We didn't expect Iceland to have so many beautiful churches in the various towns we visited.
