            The Trans-Harz Railway in Central Germany was formerly the main line of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways and runs North to South across the Harz Mountains from Wernigerode to Nordhausen. However, the tourist attraction of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, is so great that the Brockenbahn (railway) is effectively the main line today. 

The railway has a fleet of 17 Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 99.23, metre gauge, 2-10-2 tank locomotives, built from 1954-1956 which remain in regular, front line service hauling trains formed of up to 8 coaches packed with tourists.

This is steam loco 997239, illustrated hauling service 8920, the 10:24 departure from Nordhausen Nord to Brocken, powering away from the booked stop at Drei Annen Hohne with 7 coaches in tow. 

The line to the right of the image continues to Eisfelder Talmühle and eventually Nordhausen Nord.
