Lyra - a photo on Flickriver

            I got out late to the party last night, and missed a great sunset. I looked around for somewhere to shoot the last twilight of the night, and ended up at one of my favourite shooting locations in Victoria, Fisherman's Wharf.

This night shot was taken at 8:45pm, looking down the Commercial Fishing Vessel (CFV) dock. The various dock lights and intense indigo sky introduced a lot of visual confusion, so I opted for a split tone process, using blue and yellow hues sampled from the photo itself to represent the shadows and hightlights respectively.

The last time I shot this location, I only had my trusty 50mm lens. This time, I was armed with my new 16-35mm f/4G ultrawide lens, giving me significantly more latitude in a single exposure. That was fortunate, as it was too windy too pull off any parnorama or HDR photography. I was using my tripod, but both the boats and the dock were moving quite a bit, which spoiled my long exposures.

I managed to time these boats' rocking long enough to catch this 1.3 second long exposure with sufficient DOF, and a low enough ISO not to introduce too much noise. Next time, I'll try for a shorter exposure by pushing the ISO a little further, and calculating my DOF to see how far I can open my aperture without losing any depth.
