More Fun Info about Notre Dame: Notre Dame de Paris has had quite the history over the centuries. Crusaders prayed amongst these very walls before leaving on their holy wars. Polyphonic music (music arranged in parts for several voices or instruments) was developed in the cathedral. The Notre Dame School of Polyphony collectively refers to the group of composers working at Notre Dame in Paris from ~1160-1250 AD.

Notre Dame was pillaged during the French Revolution. Many of the sculptures were beheaded as they were believed to be representations of their kings. In the midst of the citizens' revolt, many of them were taken down. Many of the cathedral's treasures were either destroyed or plundered. Only the great bells avoided being melted down.
