Southern Belle

We all waited in the old street car before it would leave. Most of us were tourists, heading for a down town trip, but when she entered, wearing a bright red gown with a satin shine, a princess appeared on the scene.

Her bare arms promised physical pleasure in life, her bare feet told how she indulged in that. In her hands she carried the red shoes that Southern Belles take to the Big Ball of the year. She stumbled through the street car, even swaggering a bit, laughing hoarsely with two girl friends that were also dressed up fine, but no match to hers.

She was the perfect stranger to remember. The one you want a good picture from, so I got to my feet and asked permission. "You go ahead," she said with a genuine southern drawl. She looked tired, I could see that now, but at ease, even satisfied. "It's a not a custom in New Orleans to walk on bare feet," I said smiling. "Oh honey," she sighed, "I danced all night, I just got married."

I hadn't expected that. "So where's the groom?"
"Gone to sleep," she laughed. "He couldn't stand on his feet anymore."
"Well, congratulations," I hesitated, "with the marriage, I mean. You came especially to New Orleans for this occasion?"
"Sure honey. Is there a better city for a party?"
I could not argue with that. "So may I ask for your name, to remember you?"
"It's Mona," she said.

She gave me the requested big smile for a second shot, but looking back I prefer this one, with the tired look on her face. When we got out at Bourbon street, she had evaporated in thin air. A princess must leave a street car with some magic.
