The Volcanic Eruption at Eyjafjallajökul 15.04.10

I just wanted to give and update of event for my friends here.. I have got so many emails that i don´t think i will manage to answer them all, at least not as soon as i want to. So i am just gonna make an update here as well show these pictures.. Thank you all for your kind wishes and concerns by mail and comments..

Like most people already know the effect of this eruption on a great part of Europe are tremendous as well as on our small Iceland. A cloud of ash from the volcano swept toward mainland Europe forcing countless flight cancellations across the continent. It is a serious thing since volcanic ash can cause jet engines to shut down so these drastic measure has to be taken.

The force of the volcanic eruption under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier appears to be steady (15.04.10), although last night and this morning there has been explosive activity that is associated with volcanic ash fall.
The extent of the ash fall in the immediate vicinity of the glacier is being investigated. Samples have been collected and have been sent for examination. Preliminary findings indicate that the area around the glacier, and Myrdalsandur, to the east, have been affected. The volcanic ash has fallen to ground unevenly and sporadically, in some places in a layer up to 3 mm thick. Inhabitants of the area describe the ash as being black to grey in colour and very fine, similar to flour or sugar grains. Volcanic ash fall has also seriously restricted ground visibility in some areas. Scientists do not discount the risk of further volcanic activity and associated risk of flooding. The flow of water into the glacial lagoon is being closely monitored. Cloud cover over the glacier makes observation of the eruption from the ground difficult.

Update from midday (15.04.10)

An examination of the ash particles is in progress but it is known that the ash originated from the volcano and so it can contain the chemical Florine, which is a pollutant and can have harmful short term and long term effects for grazing animals.

Update in the afternoon (15.04.10 )

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management did act on an immediate evacuation of the area due to the imminent and immediate danger of flash flooding. Reports confirm a large body of water emerging from under Gígjökul. Inhabitants are instructed to evacuate immediately to higher ground or safe areas. The water is expected to breach the flood barriers at Þórólfssfell in Fljótshlíð.

The second evacuation:

The evacuation went well and all people are now safe but there are worries about the animals on the farms around the glacier.
The flood came through right after the evacuation ( around 20.45) causing some amount of damage in the area but it looks like it is calming down again...

The affects here on the people that life on the east side of the glacier are much more then in other parts.. There is starting to be a shortage of food supplies and all business is down and people warned not to stay outside in the ash fall without a mask as well to be aware of isolation their windows and stay on top of what will happen next. There is a huge amount of ash hovering all over that area due to how the wind lies over..

Hopefully things will turn out for the better from now so things can get more to normal for us here in little Iceland and in the rest of the world....
