Who tows the tow wagon? - a photo on Flickriver

This incredible contraption was Stockport Corporation's tow lorry. It was new in 1926 as a petrol tanker for BP and Shell - the Museum of Transport archives includes a magazine which includes an advert showing an example in original condition.

After a few years it was acquired by Stockport who converted it for use as its breakdown lorry and in this state - complete with solid tyres - it continued right up to 1970, albeit rarely used in latter days. As such it passed to SELNEC Passenger Transport Executive and passed for preservation to the Museum of Transport where it lives to this day.

It must have been quite a sight and we know of at least one sighting of it towing a Manchester Corporation Leyland 'Atlantean' bus that had broken down in Stockport's area. What's more the reputation of these early Karriers was very poor, with badly-designed components and dreadful reliability. But YM9410 womehow soldiered on and is complete to this day, although the Museum has no plans to run her any time soon.
