            Just before Halloween, a trip to the site of Wellington, well and truly a ghost town. On March 1, 1910, the worst avalanche disaster in U.S. history occurred there. Two trains had been trapped at the town just across Stevens Pass by blizzards for nine days. At 1:42 a.m., lightning struck the mountain above the site, sending down a huge avalanche that carried rocks and trees with it. The trains were swept away, and 96 people were killed. Some of the bodies weren't recovered until the spring thaw. These tunnels and snowsheds were built after the disaster, but the rail line was abandoned when the tunnel under Stevens Pass was opened in 1929. I went to the site a few days before Halloween, and even on a crisp, beautiful fall day, the place has a haunted quality.
