Quadrantid Meteor - a photo on Flickriver

Quadrantid Meteor

            This was near the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower. I was expecting very little if any activity. In fact, I did not actually see any meteors with the naked eye, but my camera was more fortunate.

I drove into the Santa Catalina mountains braving the cold, wind, and icy conditions, thinking that this might be one of the few decent opportunities in 2011 to capture meteors. But with the radiant below the horizon for a large chunk of the night and the peak hours occurring during sunset and twilight, my expectations were low. However, the moonless sky and the crisp, clear, 6000-foot perch offered the best of chances. All I need was a bit of luck.

The meteor appears to trace back to the radiant of the Quadrantids. Regardless, it is seen here streaking past the belt and scabbard of Orion. In the foreground is the Rincon mountain range covered in snow from a recent storm. The subtle lighting is from a combination of light pollution and star light.
