Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) - a photo on Flickriver

Virginia Lake, Reno, Washoe Co, Nevada (April 27th, 2009). 6a. Large urban lake.

Adult in nuptial plumage foraging close to shore in choppy weather (note the wind-blown "horns"). Horned

Grebes are uncommon in Reno. I've seen them at Virginia Lake (always in ones or twos) in March-April & October-December, most commonly in April (as here).
