Il campanile di Curon Venosta - Lago Resia - Trentino-Alto Adige - Italia [Explored #281]

Since Roman times, the towns of Graun and Reschen high in the Alps near the Italian-Swiss border had been occupied. But in 1939, the local power company drew up plans for a dam that would give the area plenty of seasonal electricity -- but create an artificial lake that would unify two natural lakes and submerge the towns in the valley between them. Despite fierce resistance on the part of the villagers, the plan was eventually passed and the ancient towns submerged in 1950. (That pesky second World War delayed things a bit.)

Today all that's visible above the waterline is the campanile, or bell tower, of Graun's 14th-century church tower. Below the waters of Lake Resia, the remains of 163 buildings house fish and eels instead of people, accessible only to divers.

When the lake freezes in winter, you can simply walk out to the bell tower. Local legend holds that on cold nights you can still hear its bells ringing -- although the bells were removed on July 18, 1950, a week before the waters came and drowned the church's bottom half.

Negli anni '40 a Curon si sospettava l’inondazione, ma si supponeva che il livello del lago venisse innalzato di soli cinque metri. Parti del paese sarebbero così rimaste intatte. Nel 1940 venne affisso un ordine del Genio civile di Bolzano. Vi era indicato il nuovo livello della diga: 22 metri. In paese non si levò alcuna obiezione. Non per disinteresse, piuttosto perché era scritto tutto in lingua italiana, che a quei tempi a Curon nessuno era in grado di parlare. Il Genio civile riebbe il suo pezzo di carta e una ditta di Milano, la Montecatini s.p.a., vinse la gara d’appalto. I preparativi iniziarono subito.

Quando i contadini capirono che presto avrebbero perso ogni cosa, organizzarono una protesta. Colpirono le auto degli ingegneri coinvolti nella costruzione della diga. "Solo quando giunsero i carabinieri con le pistole, ci siamo fatti da parte", dice Alois Prieth, che allora era solo un quattordicenne. Neanche quello bastò. Nel 1949 gli argini vennero sbarrati. Le case che si trovavano al margine della diga d’innalzamento vennero abbattute dalla ditta Montecatini. A poco a poco, innalzandosi il livello dell’acqua, il paese di Curon scomparve. Gli abitanti osservavano tutto, impotenti, dalle baracche costruite in via provvisoria per loro dalla Montecatini. Le famiglie hanno ricevuto degli indennizzi assolutamente insufficienti per poter riprendere le loro vite così com’erano. "Siamo stati defraudati", dice Alois Prieth. Ogni sguardo su quell’acqua risveglia rabbia e sofferenza. Gli abitanti che si sono stabiliti nella nuova Curon da allora hanno sempre considerato il lago come un invasore appena fuori alle loro porte.
