Merkið - The Faroese Flag - a photo on Flickriver

            The Faroese flag Merkið was made in 1919 by three Faroese students who studied in Copenhagen. They were Jens Oliver Lisberg from Fámjin, Janus Øssursson from Tórshavn and Pauli Dahl from Vágur. Some people in the Faroe Islands started to use the flag in the 1920'ies and in the 1930'ies, but it was not allowed, the Danish flag was the official flag of the islands. Today it is very rare to see a Danish flag in the Faroe Islands, it is only seen in Danish institutions or when we have official Danish visitors like the queen or the Prime Minister. The original Faroese flag is hanging inside the Church of Fámjin.

On 25 April 1940 the British government recognized our Faroese flag Merkið. It was during World War II. The Faroe Islands are a part of the Danish state, but during World War II Denmark was occupied by Germany and the Faroe Islands were occupied by United Kingdom. The Faroes had and still has many fishing vessels. It was a problem to sail with the Danish flag during the war period, so the British government decided to recognize the Faroese flag Merkið, and gave orders that all Faroese fishing vessels should have the flag painted on the side of the ship, so the British would know that these ship were friendly. Well, the Germans didn't see these fishing vessels as friendly and bombed several of them while they were sailing between Iceland and Scotland, in order to sell fish to the United Kingdom. Old fishermen from the Faroe Islands who were sailing to the UK during World War II got a pension some years ago from the UK, and they continue to get it until they die.
