People on board Johanna TG326 Watching the Rowing Competition at the Olavsoka Festival 2010

I took this photo while sitting or standing on the cliff of Tinganes on the opposite side of the Eastern Harbour of Tórshavn.
The smack on this photo is Johanna TG326 from my village Vágur. She was built in Sussex in England in 1884. She was sold to Vágur in 1894 and has been there since. She has been used for fishing until 1960'ies at least. In the 1980'ies she was in very bad shape, but she was restored, luckily. The people on board Johanna come from my village, they are watching the Olavsoka rowing competitions. Johanna's website: www.johanna.fo/index_uk.htm
Tinganes and Reyni make the Old Town of Torshavn, the administration of the Prime Minister is there. There are a lot of people standing at the sea front this day, because it is Olavsoka Eve, the day of the rowing competitions in wooden Faroese row boats of different sizes. The competition always starts with the Norðoyastevna in Klaksvík in early June and continues almost every weekend after that in village festivals around the islands. The final rowing competiton is this one in Tórshavn at Olavsoka. Olavsoka is a very old tradition, the Ting gathers again after the summer holiday and they hava an opening and the Prime Minister (Løgmaður) gives a speech about the past year and about plans for the next year, so it's a kind of new year for the Lagting (Parliament of the Faroe Islands). The Faroe Islands once belonged to Norway, later to Denmark. Olavsoka means Saint Olav's Wake, it is named after a Norwegian saint, who died on 29 July in 1030, which is 980 years ago now. Løgting is one of the oldest parliaments in the world, it is over 1000 years old.
