Flash Flood Scare

            This last fall we decided to explore a canyon deep in the Utah backcountry. We checked the weather forecast and it showed 0% chance of precip.  When we got inside the canyon, we were surprised to see lots of water and mud and it must have gotten hit with a flash flood one or two days prior.  The canyon is normally dry but not this time!  We didn't bring wetsuits so we had to swim through several pockets of very cold water and wade through deep pockets of organic debris.  I'll have to post some of the video I took later on. This shot was taken in one of the few dry spots in the canyon.  The warm colors of the sandstone really resonated with the dark shadows.  When we finally exited the canyon, we saw some ominous clouds on the horizon.  By the time we gained the ridge a full-on thunderstorm was upon us, complete with lightning, hail, and high winds.  When a lightning bolt struck within a half-mile of us, we started running for the car!  It just goes to show how unpredictable the weather can be in the desert.  We were so glad we weren't in the canyon when that storm hit!
