The Snag 3I7283

            Over the last few years, straight line winds have created a swath of clear-cut barrens forest across our back woods. Initially, I lamented the loss of trees but there seems to be a silver lining… and abundance of snags (old dead but standing trees). I have traveled distances to see the red headed woodpecker but never managed to find one in New Jersey. This year my woodpecker population is booming. I suspect this is due, in part, to my ready supply of food.  No less important, however, is the abundance of the optimum substrates for nesting… snags. This bird and its mate have been in the yard and at the feeders for weeks. I hope this will become an annual tradition. #RedheadedWoodpecker
