Ex-Trona units lead NMSE through Auburn

            On this gorgeous fall evening in 2010, the 600s had only been on Pan Am property for a few months. While most were already repainted by October, 617 and 616 still wore Trona Railway colors, and happened to be paired together leading this NMSE train. The train had been tied-down east of Hackett Rd for the entire day, and when the crew from Rigby finally arrived, I realized the fall evening light was going to be killer along this bog off Route 202 just west of Allied. I knew there was some nice foliage, but I hadn't thought about how well the Trona paint scheme would complement the orange leaves. Had they left Rumford Jct. fifteen minutes later, this would have been all shadows. By the time the train passed through New Gloucester, the sun was long gone.
