I spent a very enjoyable morning shooting at a Texas Hill Country Barrel Racing Association competition in Dripping Springs with neighbour and flickr buddy dj @ oxherder arts. I had seen barrel racing in movies but had never attended an event so this was all new to me. We set up with 70-200mm lenses attached and shot way too many frames of kids and adults tearing around a three barrel circuit. I shot in excess of 500 frames and am still editing these down to the final set but this image was one that stood out in the first pass.

The young lady in this shot was competing in the under-8s competition and finished the course in a very respectable time indeed.

Things I learned today:

1. Standing outside in the Texas heat for 4 hours is too long for a single application of sunscreen.

2. Using fully charged NiMH batteries in your D700 battery grip to give you 8fps continuous shooting is not only great fun but also very helpful in situations like this.

3. Manual exposure is your friend when the background contains a mixture of greenery and bright white boards.

4. Barrel racing is rather exciting and I definitely want to shoot more competitions.
