Not A Good Sight

            On the night of Tuesday, February 20th, Grand Elk train 303 was traveling north from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids. About a 1/2 mile outside of Hugart Yard, the train came upon a wash out that had eroded the ground under the track. West Michigan had experienced over 4 inches of rain during the previous 48 hours, with massive flooding near any body of water. The lead SD40-2 #4125 rolled off the rails and onto its side, while SD40M-2 #4189 followed. The train was moving slowly at the time of impact, which definitely softened the blow. The first car in the train also derailed. The conductor was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but the engineer went to the hospital with a punctured lung and some broken bones. He is expected to recover. Definitely not a good situation, but it could've been worse!
