Splitting the Lighthouses - a photo on Flickriver

After waiting all day for the wind and waves to let up, the Algosteel finally begins its approach to the Grand River just after sunset. The waves are still tall enough to make for some nice breaks on the pier, but conditions were deemed calm enough for the ship to navigate the river. The catwalk has been removed from the south pier in Grand Haven as a major resurfacing project gets under way, making this view possible.

The 730' Algosteel was built in 1966 as the A.S. Glossbrenner. It has a single Sulzer diesel engine rated at 9,470 horsepower. Fully loaded, the Algosteel can haul 27,000 tons of cargo. This will be the ship's last season, as Algoma Central plans to retire and scrap it next year.
