A Thousand Splendid Suns - a photo on Flickriver

            Billions of lights find their way to earth through a clear night sky and are reflected on the calm surface of Brooklyn Lake, Medicine Bow Mountains, Wyoming. To the left of the core of the Milky Way the planet Mars shines brightly. The title is shamelessly lifted from Khaled Hosseini's far more excellent work, though Hosseini also appropriated the title from a 17th century Iranian poet so hopefully I am but contributing to an artistic tradition.

Due to the time of year, the Milky Way was visible as soon as it was dark enough to emerge from the sun-dominated sky. Since it was not yet too late and the campfire was just dying down, my youngest son was adamant that he come and see the stars with me. The two of us walked to the lake shore and marveled at the vast expanse that unfolds outward past the imagination.

Technical notes: One raw file processed with two different masks in Photoshop, one for the sky and one for the water. I tried blending a longer exposure for the foreground but the reflected stars developed trails that detracted and I opted to push the exposure instead, with predictable and somewhat grainy results. I hear there is stacking software out there to help with this predicament, so that's the next miniature photographic project...
