Coming in to Roost

            A small group of Lesser Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis canadensis) heads toward the Platte River to roost as the sun sets. The cranes settle in shallow water near sandbars at night for protection from predators. In decades past, the sandbars were created by spring floods brought by snowmelt from the Rockies. Now, dams have so altered the hydrology of the Platte that sandbars soon become choked with trees, and prevent cranes from roosting. Because of this problem, cranes concentrate in a 5 mile stretch of river near Kearney, NE, because humans use heavy equipment each winter to keep the tree growth in check.
