Friend and Colleague [2] - a photo on Flickriver

            A friend claimed he got MUCH better results making portraits using his Canon 5D WonderMachine than he does with his Canon G7.  So... ever one to poke and prod at things I don't at agree with... I decided to take out my cheap Canon Point and Shoot and see if I could find any support for my friend's claim.

I put the A640 in AV mode, set the aperture to f/2.8, let the shutter speed go as high as it needed, post-processed the images using the Gimp, used two tones (one for the face, another for the background), used an HDR masking technique to modify the tonal scale to something that I found more pleasing, et voila! a pair of images.

Verdict?  Even at f/2.8 the wee-point and shoot has too much depth of field.  For this I can see using the 40D/50mm f/1.8 wide open and in a little "tighter" on the subject.  Other than that, I can clearly make out all the relevant details, demonstrate the resolution of the image, and... well.. prove my point... which is... a person doesn't need to spend $3000USD on a camera body to make a fine portrait... OK... OK... I know... the backgrounds are a little distracting... still...
