Speaking of strange looking bird- Giant Petrel

Robin Woods who we had the pleasure to meet while in the Falklands and his wife Anne have written several precious books about the Birds and Mammals of the Falkland Islands. Literally, a life long dedication to the documentation of the various species of the Falklands. His most recent books was published in November 2017 www.nhbs.com/the-birds-of-the-falkland-islands-book. If you are looking for some reference about these strange looking birds, I would recommend any of Robin Woods Books. I believe that this a Southern Giant Petrel, as they are more common than the Northern Giant Petrel in the Falklands. According to Woods, "the two species are very similar but can be easily distinguished at Sea. Immature birds of both species are sooty-black and take at least seven years to complete the changes to adult plumage. However the bill colour is diagnostic.... The Northern species tend to be brown-capped but are more safely distinguished from the Southern by the colour of the bill, which is yellowish-pink with a dark red tip, visible at greater distances than the pale green tip of the Southern species" Their local name is "Stinker"
