Central Park Pumping Station - a photo on Flickriver

            The Central Park Pumping Station at 1016 S. Central Park Ave. went into operation in June 1900, receiving water from the Carter Harrison Crib in Lake Michigan. The Springfield Pumping Station on the Northwest Side opened at approximately the same time. It has since been converted from steam generation to electric power, and the William Dever Crib was built next to the Harrison Crib in 1935.

NOTE: While photographing from public property, I was called a high-school epithet by an employee and noticed a security guard coming out of the facility while driving away. During my call to the station, I was told my car was photographed and I would be “investigated.” Thanks to rjseg1 for sending along once-classified guidelines for photographing federal facilities, which should also apply to state and local buildings.

NOTE 2: Application for a variation to permit construction of 12-foot tall iron security fence and rolling gate at an existing pumping station building with new one-story additions was submitted at the October 2023 Zoning Committee meeting. I guess they need more security to protect the animals.
