Bass Harbor Head Light, Acadia National Park HDR

On my second night in Acadia National Park , I went to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. I knew this was an area I wanted to get a sunset shot...after all, everyone does. Out of a combination of anxiety and poor planning, I arrived 2 hours before sunset. I set up my spot and waited, watching the tide rise. About an hour before sunset a few people joined me in my spot and about 45 minutes prior to sunrise many people started to show up and set up about 30 feet behind me. One guy told me that I was "too far forward" and "could I move" because where he was was "the shot most people take." Luckily the tide was low enough that I could hide behind a rock so I wouldn't get in people's way. But if the tide were a bit earlier, I would have had to move into people's sight lines.

I am curious what people think about this. What is the etiquette? On one hand, in a densely packed situation like this (there are only so many rocks you can set up on) you should be respectful of others' desire to get a good photo as well. I was just taken off guard by the guy's comments about what people usually do, making his spot the "right" spot. My thought is the right thing to do is, if you want to get a closer shot, to go up and get it, then come back. But then once everyone does it for 5 minutes you miss sunset. Be accommodating unless it completely screws up what you're trying to do. What do you think?
