Did they forget it was there? Did they get ill, or die, and no one knows to go get it? Is the key to the lock lost? Or is it just abandoned? Often bikes like these, locked up to some fence, light pole or bike rack, just sit through the winter. The tires go flat. Some frames will get pitted and terribly rusty, while others look kinda' new all winter long. Sorta' like people over the cold winter months.

Sometimes you can see where ne'er-do-wells try to pick the lock or break the chain, without luck, and make off with some ill gotten gains. Other times bits and pieces of the bike get nipped off quietly in the night - the seat, handle bars, a wheel, whatever is available and easy removed. It looks a bit like a corpse being stripped by vultures or other members of nature's cleanup crew. Waste not, want not.

Then one day, usually in spring, but sometimes late in winter, you look up and the bike is gone. Doggone it! I was waiting, looking out the window, checking in everyday, hoping to catch a glimpse of whoever it was that came to get it. Just to see. Man, woman, young, old? Maybe the city's sanitation crew with bolt cutters. Whoever. I wanted to chat with them. Maybe there's a juicy story behind the bike's being abandoned? Some grand tale of longing, loss or woe. Probably not.

But I missed them. And all those stories I constructed around this bike in the snow are gone too. No verification. I should have taken more images of it while I had the chance. Like taking pictures of the kids over time as they grow. Or an animal, decaying slowly, deep in the woods. Oh, well too late now.

Which reminds me. My bike is in the garage. I need to get it into the shop for a tuneup. Spring will be here soon.
