Colias crocea - the Clouded Yellow - a photo on Flickriver

Just got back from a short excursion to the south of France. It will take a while to process all the pics but here is one to be going on with.
This is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan ranging from 52 to 62mm and is found at elevations from sea level to 1600m. The breeding grounds for Colias crocea  are parts of North Afica, southern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia. However, it is a very strong migratory species and therefore occurs in varying numbers throughout a large part of Europe during the summer months. It can appear in almost any open habitat but in its breeding grounds it tends to prefer well-drained chalk and limestone grassland, cultivated Alfalfa (Lucerne) fields, and clover-rich headlands. They are avid nectar feeders especially on vareties of scabious, knapweed, clovers, dandelions, and vetches.
Eggs are laid singly on a variety of foodplants including - Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) , Lucerne (Medicago sativa,/i> , Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) , Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria) , and Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) . The eggs hatch after little more than a week, the whole lifecycle from egg to adult taking approximately 46-66 days.
