Leptidea sinapis - the Wood White - a photo on Flickriver

This species is distributed across Europe but now quite rare in the U.K. and confined to a few localised sites. It is found in a diverse range of habitats including alpine meadows, sparse woodland, railway cuttings, and limestone gorges up to 1,500m above sea level. Habitats are characterised as being warm and sheltered where there is an abundance of larval foodplants and nectar sources.
It is a delicate butterfly with a wingspan of 19-24mm and flies close to the ground. It is sun loving and in dull weather does not move very far, sheltering beneath low vegetation. It has a wide range of nectar sources including stitchwort, vetch, and bird's foot trefoil. Males can sometimes be seen puddling on damp ground.
