Carpenter Ant on Observation Post - Camponotus Ligniperda

I've met the ant above during my last holidays on a really lovely walk around a lake through forests and meadows.

The Brown Black Carpenter Ant {Thanks, Janet for the English Name!] (Camponotus ligniperda) is an ant species from the genus of Camponotus.
It is one of the largest occurring in Central Europe ant species. The length of workers varies greatly and is 6-14 mm. The queens are 16-18 mm, males only 8-12 mm long.
The distribution area covers the whole of Europe. In Central Europe, this kind of widespread and by geographical area quite often. The brown black ant chooses significantly warmer and drier sites than the black ant (Camponotus herculeanus). They settled mainly sunny deciduous and mixed forests or bushy grasslands. It is also found in field margins.
In addition to the diet of the honeydew of aphids takes this kind sweet juices directly from plants and uses food sources up to 40 m away from the nest.
The nests are placed in dead wood, soft wood is preferred in general. The erode the trees and settled in up to three meters in height. To the nest belongs usually a large underground part.

Die Braunschwarze Rossameise (Camponotus ligniperda), ist eine Ameisenart aus der Gattung der Rossameisen (Camponotus).
Sie gehört zu den größten in Mitteleuropa vorkommenden Ameisenarten. Die Länge der Arbeiterinnen variiert stark und beträgt 6 bis 14 Millimeter. Die Königinnen sind 16 bis 18 Millimeter, die Männchen nur 8 bis 12 Millimeter lang.
Das Verbreitungsgebiet erstreckt sich über ganz Europa. In Mitteleuropa ist diese Art weit verbreitet und gebietsweise recht häufig. Die Braunschwarze Rossameise wählt deutlich wärmere und trockenere Standorte als die Schwarze Rossameise (Camponotus herculeanus). Hauptsächlich besiedelt sie sonnige Laub- und Mischwälder oder bebuschten Trockenrasen. Sie ist auch an Feldrainen zu finden.
Neben der Ernährung mit dem Honigtau der Blattläuse nimmt diese Art auch süße Pflanzensäfte direkt auf und nutzt Nahrungsquellen in bis zu 40 Meter Entfernung vom Nest.
Die Nester werden in Totholz angelegt, wobei Weichholz generell bevorzugt wird. Die Bäume werden ausgenagt und in bis zu drei Meter Höhe besiedelt. Zum Nest gehört auch meist ein großer unterirdischer Teil. Wikipedia
