This willow got its name from its shots that are often purple or brownish color, but you can see just as often yellowish shots. 

The male catkins appear early spring, first the stamen are purple colored then they turn yellow.

Another helpful fact to know when identifying them in winter is that the buds can stand in pairs almost opposite to each other, but not always. (Generally willows have their leaves and buds in alternate positions.)

The shots of this willow, as some of the other Salix species has been used in basketry. 

Endemic to Europe and Asia. Loves areas near water.
