sorry i have not been around flickr much lately. i just have not found the time. i'm trying to come back!

many of you asked about how i do my lighting,
i used the 400mm lens, the camera is about 30 or 40 meters away from where i stood. yes, it's a long way to run each time i want to change settings! it's a good job the D3 has an interval timer so it can take as many photos as i want in a row.

Larissa asked how many photos do i take until i get one i am happy with. it's a good question!
because well, i take a lot! usually between 50 and 150. it usually takes me 10 or 20 photos to get the settings with balancing flash and ambient right. i am somewhat a perfectionist so i take a lot of photos so i can have a high chance to get one perfect shot out of the set.

so i used backlighting here. just one nikon sb900 on full power behind where i stood. a warm color gel was over the flash to give it the orange.
it's really that simple :)

the trick is balancing the ambient light with the flash power. i find the sb900 is not powerful enough to overcome daylight so i shot this very early morning before the sun came up. the light is slowly getting brighter so i have to get the shot before it gets too light. i would love to have a more powerful flash, but the sb900 is so portable.
