Things.

Project Things explores the topics of migration and memories. 10 young people who have come to the United Kingdom from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, China and South Korea were asked to choose a precious personal belonging that they have brought from their homeland and write a short caption about the chosen object in their native language.
Being an immigrant myself, I am interested in a relation between people and their homeland. In Things this relation is represented using objects as memories. Those objects are past in present. They are stories, reminders of things that have happened and of people that have been or still are. They are not just objects as they have gained a special meaning for a person and because of this meaning were chosen as precious. Captions serve for the viewer to understand the meaning. However, they are written in native languages of those people, which means they can be read only by those speaking the language. Captions are written by hand and in native languages to make photographs more personal and to emphasize the importance of individual experience of migration in the project.
