A Late Show

            After a grey Easter bank holiday, the sun put in a late appearance on Monday evening, so I went for a walk . . .

Antony Passage is a hamlet situated beside a tidal section of the River Lynher just south of Saltash, S.E. Cornwall, where Forder Lake adjoins the river.

On the left of the photograph a small private harbour, situated in front of a row of cottages, can be seen. This used to be the launch point of the Antony Passage ferry to the quay at Jupiter Point on the Antony House shore of the river. The cottage on the far left of the row was the Ferry House Inn, the ferryman also being the licensee. 

The three houses behind were built on the old London to Penzance railway embankment which crossed Forder Lake on a Brunel designed wooden viaduct which would have dominated this tiny village. The trains have used the stone Forder viaduct a few hundred yards further inland since 1908.

The group of cottages on the right are all associated with the mill pond, the stone house in the middle being the Old Mill.  Dating back to 1613, with evidence for a mill back to late medieval times, the mill pond is  an early example of harnessing the tides to provide power. As the tide goes out and comes in, the water rushes through the narrow channel between the old mill and the stone boundary wall.
